Hello All! Sorry it's been so long since my last post. Our lives are incredibly busy these days. School will be coming to an end in a few weeks and the girls are excited about summer vacation. They are involved in so many things now that its hard to keep up with sometimes. They are taking piano lessons now and loving it. They are in girl scouts, and they are also playing coach pitch softball for the Dixie Youth League. They had a double header last night and who knew watching little kids play ball could be so exciting! Those little girls were something to behold! The first game they lost by only one point, but the second game, they steamrollered the other team 15 to 5! Sarah batted a home run and then scored again in the next inning on an RBI. Emily scored twice on RBIs. One of Sarah's scores came from her sister. Emily was up at bat and Sarah was hugging third base. Emily nailed the ball and got all the way to second and Sarah scored a run. The next girl at bat knocked the ball away for a home run and Emily came in to home as well. We were so excited. The girls were just tickled to death. Anyway, we're having a blast playing ball and we are looking forward to more fun this summer. Oh, BTW, the girls are doing fantastic at school too. They have stayed on the Headmaster's Honor Roll all year for having straight As. We're so proud of our girls and all they have accomplished in their lives, knowing how far they have come to get to where they are now. God deserves all the praise for these precious little girls. They would not be here if it weren't for Him. One more thing and I'll wind this up, Our girls were baptized at First Baptist Church Hickory Withe on March 13th. Praise God for these beautiful girls!

Hello All! Golly! It's been awhile since I've been here hasn't it? Well, things are going well at the Garner household. The girls just celebrated their 8th birthday 2 weeks ago. Wow! Can't believe they're 8 already. Time sure flies doesn't it? Well they just had their 8 year checkup yesterday. Both are very healthy, and for the first time in her life, Emily is bigger than Sarah. Sarah is 51 inches tall and weighs 54 pounds. Emily is 51 and 1/4 inches tall and weighs 58 pounds! Amazing! The girls are doing beautifully in school. Both are on the straight A honor roll and are top readers in their class.

BREAKING NEWS!!! This just in from the Garner household. Young Emily and Sarah Garner, age 7, attended Vacation Bible School at Warren Community Church this summer. We just got a call from the senior pastor there and he told us that during that week of VBS, both Emily and Sarah gave their heart to Jesus! I am in tears as I write this. It is so exciting and wonderful that my babies now have Jesus in their hearts. I'm about ready to shout it from the rooftop. My sweet miracle babies that are only here by the grace of God and through the prayers of so many people, are now beginning their lives anew as children of God. Praise the Lord !!!!!!

Hi there! Just dropping by to say hello. We have now been in our new house for about 5 months now and we are enjoying being in the country. Hugh, however, is not so enthused about his commute to and from work. We LOVE country life. There is so much to see and do here that you just can't do in the city. We have so much space to run around and enjoy the outdoors. There is so much wildlife out here, it is amazing. We have bird feeders so we can see a variety of birds up close. We have barn swallows nesting under the eaves of our side porch and the master porch. I've seen baby birds in the nest peeking out at us. So cute! There are Canada geese that stop by the neighbor's pond every morning, and now our neighbor has a little white duck that will just walk up to you to visit. There are Kildeers nesting at the edge of our driveway and they have 4 eggs in their nest. When the babies hatch, they are the cutest little things. They are born ready to run and will leave the nest right after hatching. They look like cotton balls running around on toothpicks. We had a box turtle wander up onto our front porch one morning and the girls were having a fit over it. I went out and picked it up so the girls could see and it pulled itself into its shell and all you could see were its eyes peeping out. Then there are the frogs in the pond next door. Bullfrogs and who know what other kids of frogs are in there, but we get serenaded by the frog chorus/jam session every night. Every once in a while the frogs annoy us, but it is so much better than hearing the neighbors sub woofers going up and down the street at our old house. It is so quiet and peaceful out here. There are people down the road who have miniature horses. I've seen guinea fowl, big African cattle with a new calf, chickens, and even emus since we've moved out here. My Dad has allowed some people to cultivate some of his land and so by summer's end we should be seeing soybeans growing and maybe even eating some edamame'. Daddy has also planted a garden, so we will be eating fresh vegetable from the garden. I'm growing some tomatoes in pots, and a few herbs as well as some sunflowers that have started coming up through the ground. There's just nothing like living in the country. Well, I guess that's about all. God bless- Julie

Hello All! Summer vacation is here and we are having a ball already. The girls are taking swimming lessons and enjoying it immensely. Hugh and I just got back from Paris last week. We had a great time and saw some great stuff. We got soaked in the rain walking around Paris the night Jennifer( another NSA wife) and I arrived. Who cares? It's PARIS! My white canvas flats I had on are no longer white(sigh)and I dropped chocolate ice cream on my shirt, but I was in PARIS. SO, because my flats were wet I had to wear sandals to the Louvre the next day.

Hello All, I was just looking over my last post on Easter and realized that I left a few things out. Let's see... Last summer I was supposed to go to Paris with Hugh on his business trip and then his boss decided to retire and everything came to a screeching halt and the trip was postponed.( Yikes! How's THAT for a run on sentence?) I now have a flight scheduled for May 26 to join him in Paris! He's leaving three days before I do, so this will be the first time I make a transatlantic flight without him. I will be traveling with another NSA wife so I won't be completely alone. In other news, Hugh, the girls and I will be making a trip to Nashville on May 4. It seems that the girls' art teacher at school entered some of her students' art projects in the TANAS state art contest and Sarah's art project won a prize! We have to go to Nashville to accept the prize. We are all so proud of our budding artist. And finally, the girls will be graduating from Kindergarten on May 14. The girls are at the head of their class and doing fantastic! Well, that's all for now, God Bless- Julie

Hello All! Yes, I know it's been awhile since the last update, and lots of things have been happening. The girls are now 7 years old, can you believe it? We had a great Christmas, although we didn't get to celebrate in the new house. It wasn't quite finished before Christmas, so we had to have it at the old house. We have now moved in to the new house. We moved the second weekend in January and it was FREEZING cold outside. We managed to get moved in spite of the cold, and all our friends were on hand to help out. My parents are thrilled that we are right next door and the girls love being able to see Grammy and Grandpa all the time now. I love it too. My family has always been very close knit and it's fun being able to be so close to them. We just got back here from my parent's house. It's Easter Sunday and we spent the day over there with Dad's family doing the annual Cook Easter Egg Hunt. What fun! I'm so glad the weather was beautiful and everyone had a ball! Well, on to other news. 3 weeks ago I was sitting up at the girls' school in the pick up line waiting for the girls to be dismissed from school. I had my knitting with me and was knitting away when I looked up to see Emily and her teacher come around the side of the building from the playground and Emily was crying. The teacher told me Emily had fallen off the merry go round and hurt herself. I took Emily inside the building to look her over to see where she was hurt. We got in the bathroom and I lifted her shirt to check her over, but she wouldn't let me raise her right arm. Hmmm....that's not right, so I asked her where it hurt and she pointed out her right collarbone. Oh, boy, this was sounding more and more like the time her cousin Hannah broke her collar bone several years ago.

Well, looks like it has been awhile since anyone has posted anything here so guess that means I need to step up to the plate. We've been busy with the girl's cheerleading, school, house building, work and unicycling. The girls have really enjoyed cheering and they do a really good job. They have learned their routines well. They have been doing well in school as well. They are checking books out of the library and reading them. They like to read which is something I hope they will continue to enjoy. Our house is very close to being done, but we are experiencing a couple of delays. The countertops were thought to be on their way but turns out they are not even made yet. They've also discovered a leak in the geothermal system (apparently in one of the 6 holes they dug). They are trying to find it so they can fix it. Builder is saying we should be able to move in by Christmas, but a lot will have to go right for that to work out. And as for unicycling, we have two parades coming up. The Bartlett Parade on Dec 5th at 5:00 pm and the Germantown Parade on Dec 12th at 2:00 pm. Check out www.memphisunicycleclub.org for more information. Well that's enough for now. Hope everyone had a good thanksgiving and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Hugh

Hi there! Can't believe it's September already. Boy how time flies. The girls have started a new school this year, Rossville Christian Academy, in preparation for our move to Somerville, TN, anticipated to occur in late October. They love it! They have joined the k4 thru 3rd grade cheerleading squad, and are loving it. We are hoping this will also help Emily with her shyness. Emily hit a milestone this week! She learned to ride her bike without training wheels! Sarah has been riding a two wheeler for quite some time, and is now zooming around like Evel Knievel! Grandpa got Emily a smaller bike, thinking that maybe she was afraid because her feet didn't touch the ground very well on her princess bike. So anyway, we try out the smaller bike, and Lo and Behold! Emily was riding! Before, on the princess bike, she whined and fretted every time we worked with her on it. This time, she had a HUGE grin on her face, and Grandpa was immensely pleased with Emily's newfound prowess on her bike. She's even starting off on her own! We're calling the bike "the magic pink bike"

Hello All! Just a short note to let you know the latest news. Emily and Sarah have just a few short weeks left of school before summer vacation. They will be visiting Rossville Christian Academy on Tuesday to be tested and see where they are academically, in preparation for registering them for school. Our house is going up like hotcakes now. It's all framed and has walls and a roof. No shingles yet, though, or brick, and there was a problem with the roof on the back of the house, that will be resolved shortly, I think. Anyway it's going up quickly, so I'd better get started packing boxes! That's all for now, God Bless- Julie

EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it! At approximately 9:20 pm tonight, young Emily Garner, age 6, lost her first tooth! It's been wiggly for quite some time, but has been extremely stubborn about coming out. With a little help from Mommy and Daddy, it finally turned loose. We were all quite excited and the girls and I were squealing like banshees with excitement. Pictures and videos were taken of the momentous event, and the tooth is now tucked snugly beneath Emily's pillow in anticipation of the tooth fairy's arrival.

On another subject, our house in Somerville is finally taking shape. We have a temporary driveway for the equipment trucks, plumbing, and a newly poured slab. We have to wait a few days for the concrete to dry before anything else can be done. Anyway, it's exciting to watch it go up. Every week there's something new to see. Well, that's all from the Garner household for now. God bless- Julie

Hello all. March is here and it certainly came in with a bang! We had a snowstorm come in that dumped almost a foot of snow on us, nearly unheard of in our area. The snow delayed the work on the house, which still hasn't started yet, since the contractor has had problems finding someone to start work on putting in the driveway. Now we're going to have wet weather until probably the middle of next week. Our Thursday night unicycle practices have gotten more exciting lately. I am now able to ride the length of our practice room fairly easily, and am now working on turning so I can ride back. More exciting, though, is Sarah's riding skills. Two weeks ago, she started letting go of her daddy's hand and riding a bit on her own. Her daddy is thrilled!

Also on another exciting note, the Tooth Fairy is circling our house! Sarah has 2 more loose teeth and Emily now has 4 wigglers in her mouth! We are just waiting and watching to see who will lose a tooth first! Anyway, that's the latest from the Garner household. God bless- Julie

Hello all. It's been a month since my last post and several things have happened since then. It is with sadness that I must report that Hugh's mother passed away on Feb. 6th. The girls were very sad to lose their sweet Grandma, and I was sad to lose her too. She was such a sweet lady, and to have had as many problems as she had, she never complained. She went peacefully, and for that I am grateful. She will be sorely missed. Now, on to more exciting news. We will be closing on the loan for our new house on Wednesday, and construction will begin shortly thereafter. Today is my birthday and it is also president's day, so the girls are off from school. My birthday present to myself was not having to drag myself out of bed early to get the girls to school. Well, that's the latest news from the Garner household. Please continue to pray for us as we continue to adjust to life without Hugh's mother, and as we begin construction on our dream house. God bless- Julie

Hello All! Sorry it's been so long since our last update. Life just gets crazy around here sometimes. Happy belated holidays to all. Today is an exciting day. Today Emily and Sarah are 6 years old! Can you believe the girls are growing so fast? I remember the day they were born. We were all so scared because they were so tiny and we weren't sure they would make it. They turned out to be fighters and now look at them. God has definite plans for these little girls, and HE meant for them to be here. I just thank God every day for these little ones He has given us. Praise God for my beautiful little girls! BTW, Hugh took some pictures of the girls with the fireplace shovel last night so they should be turning up here soon. We're having a party today, and our house will be full of people. Wish us luck! God Bless- Julie

BREAKING NEWS!!!! From the Garner household, we are proud to report that young Sarah, age 5, has discovered a LOOSE TOOTH!! We got home from unicycling tonight and were enjoying a frosty from Wendy's when I noticed one of Sarah's lower front teeth was a little off kilter. I touched the tooth and it wiggled! Everyone is so excited. We even called Grammy and Grandpa to tell them. Emily was thrilled too, but now she's a little jealous that she doesn't have a loose tooth too. Sarah wiggled the tooth until bedtime. At this rate the tooth will probably be out by weekend. We'll keep you posted on any further developments. I can't believe my babies are getting big enough to start getting their grown up teeth. Time sure flies. That's all for now. God Bless- Julie

10/13/08 Report

Wow! It's October already, and we're heading full steam ahead for Halloween in a few weeks. The girls have been in Kindergarten for about 8 weeks now. They LOVE it! Their teacher is impressed with how smart they are. I had to substitute in their classroom Friday because the teacher's two year old son had a nasty stomach bug. There were two other teachers out that day and they were desperate for someone to take her class. Apparently someone suggested me, and the headmaster called over to the Elementary building and asked me if I would. Of course I said yes. I had to run back home and grab some lunch and change into appropriate apparel for a teacher and off I went, zooming back to the school to be in charge of a class of little ones. I enjoyed it thoroughly. The kids were sweet and good and I had no trouble at all. Of course Emily and Sarah were thrilled to have me in their class all day. We went on a camping trip to Pickwick a couple of weeks ago and had a marvelous time. Grandpa packed bicycles for the kids and one for the grownups to share. He and I were the only adults that rode it though. Anyway, the girls were zooming around on their little bikes with training wheels. Sarah kept begging her Grandpa to take the training wheels off her bike, but he said no, wait until you come to our house next time and we'll take them off. She agreed and no more was said about the training wheels. This weekend, my Mom's only living brother came to town for his 50th high school reunion. He and Aunt Loretta live in Oxnard California. They stayed with my parents this weekend, and we had a family gathering at their house yesterday to spend time with them before they left to go back home. Two of Mom's sisters came, and several cousins came too. Anyway, we had a marvelous time with Uncle Robert and Aunt Loretta. Of course the kids were flying all over the place on bicycles and scooters. Hugh even got out his unicycle and zipped around a bit. Sarah had not forgotten about the training wheels on her bike. She asked Grandpa again about taking them off. He agreed and Sarah was thrilled. She had on a dress, and ran off with Grammy to change into pants while Grandpa went down to the basement to remove the training wheels. I went to the van to get her helmet, and got downstairs just in time to see Sarah come running out of the basement with pants on and knee pads and elbow pads. The training wheels were off the bike and we were ready to begin. Hugh and Grandpa took turns running behind the bike to keep her steady, and all of a sudden she just took off! There were a few false starts and one minor crash that involved Grandpa taking a tumble(he's ok), but she did it!! My amazing miracle child was riding her bicycle WITHOUT training wheels! Today, after school she begged me to take the training wheels off her bike here, and I did. We went outside, she got on it and took off again. She is so proud of herself, and her Daddy and I are too. Emily tried to ride without training wheels too, and she did pretty well, but she's not as adventurous as her sister, and stopped after a few minutes. Emily doesn't like to be outdone by her twin, so it probably won't be very long before she's riding a two wheeler too. Well, it's bedtime and I need to get my children in bed. That's all from the Garner homefront for now. Sorry it's been so long since my last post. God Bless- Julie

Last month Julie had her beach vacation. This month, I managed to sneak in my unicycling vacation. Julie and I dropped Sarah and Emily off with Grammy and Grandpa for 6 days so we could fly out to Rapid City, South Dakota and participate in the 2008 North American Unicycling Championships and Convention (NAUCC). Richard, the current Memphis Unicycle Club president, also went. We left Saturday afternoon and arrived in Rapid City Saturday evening. We all checked into our rooms and then went to get a bite to eat. Once back at the hotel, I put together our unicycles and made sure they had survived the trip. We then went to bed exhausted from the traveling and all the running around we did in preparation for the trip.

Sunday morning came and we decided that we had enough time to go visit Mt Rushmore prior to registration opening at 1:00 pm.

06/24/08 Report

Hi everyone! Sorry it's been so long since the last update. We've had our share of excitement around here lately. Let's see if I can bring you up to date on things that have happened since the last update. Hugh's mother was in the hospital with pneumonia over Easter. She only stayed a few days and then was released. She's back to her usual routine now and doing well. Our trip to Denmark (Hugh's business trip) was wonderful. We had a great time. I got to relax while Hugh worked. We got to take a tour of Helsinor and Hugh and I spent Saturday in Copenhagen.
We just got back from a family vacation to Orange Beach on the 14th. Everyone had a ball, and no one got seriously sunburned, only slightly toasted. Sarah got a little water in her ear, which started an infection. It drained for a couple of days and she complained of pain, so we called our doctor and he prescribed antibiotics on the Friday before we left to come home. By Monday of last week, Sarah was running a low temp and still complaining that it hurt. We went to see Dr. Paul and he prescribed ear drops. We used the ear drops as directed, but by that time her ear was so swollen that the drops were not getting to where they needed to be, and it was so painful that even the slightest touch would send her into orbit. We were giving her Motrin for the pain, but nothing we did seemed to help much. By Tuesday Sarah was miserable. Her temp was climbing, and she couldn't stand for anyone to even get near her ear. I checked her temp that afternoon just before 5 o'clock, because she was lying in her beanbag moaning and crying from the pain. I picked her up to cuddle her in my lap and offer what comfort I could give. She was burning up with fever. I checked her temp. 104! I checked again. 103. Better than 104, but still too high. I gave her more Motrin and called Dr. Paul.He said she needed iv antibiotics since the oral one wasn't working and that we should take her to the emergency room. SO instead of our usual unicycle night, we were headed to the emergency room. We got there and after waiting for a little while, we were taken back to a room. They started an iv to get blood and to start her on fluids and pain meds. One nurse tried to distract her with a toy while another nurse and I held her still so a third nurse could put in the iv. She nearly tore apart the building with her screams when the iv went in. I was nearly beside myself listening to my baby scream in pain and unable to do anything about it. They gave her some morphine for the pain and then cleaned out the yuk from her ear and put in a wick. She screamed like a banshee even with the drugs. But they did it quickly so it was not a prolonged agony.
They decided they needed a ct scan of Sarah's head to see how far the infection had spread. By this time it became apparent that she was going to be admitted, so I took Emily home with me to get some clothes and things to take back up to the hospital while Hugh stayed with Sarah. I also got us something to eat because Emily was starving. While we were gone, they took Sarah to get the ct done and were all finished by the time we got back. The ct scan showed fluid in the mastoid space behind her ear, and there was talk of possibly doing surgery to drain the fluid. They took us up to a room and got us settled in and Hugh and Emily went home. The next day, the ENT doctor came in and told us there wasn't enough fluid to drain and that they would treat it with medicine. Thank you, Lord for good news!
We stayed until Thursday morning and then were discharged. So everything is back to normal now. We have an appointment to see the ENT on Thursday for a follow up. Sarah also has an appointment with the opthalmologist on Thursday. Hopefully we'll be able to discontinue the patching. She's been so good about the patching and I'm so proud of her.
In other news, Hugh and I will be going to South Dakota for the annual unicycling convention on the 5th of next month.
We also have news on the house building project we are about to undertake. We met with the houseplan lady yesterday and talked to her about what we wanted to do with the plans. Hopefully by the end of this month we will have our building permit, and will break ground sometime in July or August. I'm so excited about building our new house I can't stand it. Anyway, that's the news from the Garner homefront. Sorry I'm so wordy, but there was a lot to tell. God bless- Julie

Hello from Denmark! Today is the last day of Hugh's meetings and he and I are spending the rest of today and tomorrow in Copenhagen. I am sitting in on the meeting today and doing my best to be quiet and unobtrusive. We've already checked out of our room and I had nowhere else to go. We went on a walking tour in Helsinor? Last night and had a ball. Some of us ladies even walked out to the beach after dinner last night and stuck our feet in the water. Walking through the sand was actually colder than the water. The weather has been quite nice here. Upper 60's during the day and upper 40's at night. Very sunny as well. I'm looking forward to spending the next two days with my husband.

3/17/08 Report

Happy Saint Patrick's Day to all Irish folk out there! Wow! It's been awhile since the last update. Everyone is doing well here, for the most part. Sarah has a cold at the moment, but seems to be on the mend. Emily has been having some trouble with her ears lately. The girls had a hearing and speech screening at preschool in the latter part of January. Sarah passed just fine, and Emily passed the speech part, but did not pass the hearing part. They sent us a note about it and recommended that we have her re-screened at the Memphis Hearing and Speech center at the U of M. We did, and she failed again. She responded to the higher frequency sounds in her right ear, but not the lower frequency sounds. She did not respond at all in her left ear. Anyway, they told us to see the pediatrician because there might be fluid behind her eardrums causing the problem. So we made an appointment with the pediatrician. Life goes on while we wait for the day to see the Doctor(which was today). Last night, in the meantime, apparently Sarah decided that Emily was getting too much attention about her ears, and climbed up on a small shelf in their room, and then falls off, banging her private area on the shelf on her way down. She was SUPPOSED to be sleeping, since it was bedtime. NOT!! I was getting ready for bed in my room when I heard the crash and scream. I ran in, and she was in a heap on the floor amongst the toys. I picked her up and stood her on the bed to examine her for injuries, and she pulled down her pull- up. She was bleeding a little and already bruised. OUCH!!! So, in addition to Emily being seen by the doctor about her ears, Sarah now has to be seen about her private area. So, the long and the short of it is that Emily has thick, almost pus like fluid behind both eardrums. There was no infection, the eardrums were not red, just the fluid behind them. So we get a ten day course of antibiotics and some sort of antihistamine or something to clear up her eustacian tubes. We go back to see the doctor in ten days for a re check and the we'll see where we go from there. Sarah is just fine. He checked her out. No major damage done. She's just gonna be sore for a while. Anyway, so goes the life of the Garner twins. One last thing. Please pray for Hugh's mom. She's fighting a cold right now and has some chest congestion and coughing. I hope she gets over it soon. Well, that's all from the Garner household. We'll keep you posted about Emily's ears. Have a happy Easter! God Bless- Julie

Hi everyone! Sorry it's been a while since the last update. Well, the girls are now 5 years old. They celebrated their birthday a couple of weeks ago, and had a wonderful time at their party. They wanted Barbie cakes for their party( I always do two cakes for their birthday), so I was happy to oblige, and they turned out really good, despite my efforts. I still can't believe they are 5 already. Where does the time go? It just seems to fly by so quickly these days. Anyway, I look at those girls running all over the house, asking a million questions about anything and everything, learning to write, and on the verge of being able to read, and I am just amazed at how far they have come. I firmly believe that God has big plans for these girls! Emily is even exploring the idea of asking Jesus to come into her heart. She INSISTS that she has asked Him to come into her heart. We took her to talk to our pastor Sunday, but, being as shy as she is, she wouldn't talk to him. I'm not sure she really understands what it all means, but we will continue to talk to her about it. Keep is in your prayers on this matter. As a parent, and a Christian since the age of 10, I feel that it is very important to teach them about God and Jesus and to help them come to accept Jesus as their Savior.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. We certainly had a wonderful Christmas. We went to Julie's parents for Christmas Eve brunch where Grammy and Grandpa gave Emily and Sarah bicycles. This, of course, brought great joy to the girls, which, in turn, gave great joy to all of us. My only complaint with the bicycles was that they had three training wheels! :) (Sorry, unicycle humor there.) We then had Christmas Eve dinner at our house with my mother and Aunt Lucy. Again we had a good time and mom was in one of her "up" spells so she got to enjoy the evening.

The girls, of course, woke us up Christmas morning and were excited to open up all their presents. They spent most of the day playing with their gifts which included bean bag chairs, cheer and fun bears, Barbies and hoola hoops.

All in all, we had a great Christmas and a fantastic year. We appreciate all our friends and family and hope that you and yours have a very Happy New Year.

Oh, before I sign off here, I did post some pictures to the 2007/Christmas gallery and the Unicycling/12/08/2007 Herb Parsons Muni gallery.

May God bless you and yours in the new year!
